Rounding Third, And Heading For Home Game Summary

Reds Spoil Bailey's Good Start, Find Way To Win 4-3

Box Score

Good

The Reds showed again tonight why they are the best team in the NL Central. Now a certain ESPN Radio host may beg to differ, but the bottom line is that the Reds win when they need to against the teams they are supposed to beat and the St. Louis Cardinals don’t.

Chris Heisey laid down two beautiful  bunts, one for a sacrifice and the other for a base hit. An extra bit of praise for Heisey, who if you saw the game then you noticed him take a peak at third in the 12th inning and caught the 3B napping, enabling him to lay the bunt down to get on base.

Homer Bailey was lights out. He made one mistake that only in Great American Ballpark would you pay for it. His line on the night was 7IP 5H 1R 1ER 0BB 9SO on 109 pitches.

The Reds Bullpen, except for Francisco Cordero. They had rough time in Colorado so it was good to see them get back on the right track. Their line on the night(minus Cordero): 4.2IP 1H 0R 0ER OBB 2SO by Masset, Rhodes, Ondrusek, Chapman, Bray, and Smith.

The Cuban Missile was dominant yet again retiring the side in the 10th on 10 pitches, striking out 2.

The Bad

Dusty Baker. Nothing new. He still drives me crazy.

The Ugly

Francisco Cordero. He didn’t walk anyone, but he gave up 4 consecutive hits, resulting in two runs. He makes too much money to do what he did tonight.

**** Tomorrow night is the 25th Anniversary of 4192 by Pete Rose. It will be a special night at GABP with Pete being honored on the field, however, Major League Baseball in their infinite wisdom will not be allowing Pete to address the crowd. Hey Bud, do us all a favor and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Rounding Third, And Heading For Home Game Summary

The Good

Drew Stubbs had a nice day in the leadoff spot going 2 for 4, with 2RBI’s, and a run

Joey Votto got his 100th RBI, the first Reds 1B since Tony Perez in 1975

Ramon Hernandez and Paul Janish were 2 for 4 with an RBI and a Run a piece in the bottom of the order

Aroldis Chapman was brought into a tight situation in the 7th up 5-4 and the bases loaded and Rockies star Carlos Gonzalez at the plate and got him to hit into the 6-4-3 double play

The OK

Travis Wood looked like he might follow up his dominant performance in St. Louis today, he still pitched fine, but the two batters he walked all scored and was the difference between a solid outing and a mediocre one. Nonetheless his line was 5IP 5H 3R 3ER 2BB 6SO on 99 pitches

The Bad

The Reds offense after the 2nd inning couldn’t get anything going offensively and hit into two double plays.

Nick Masset, as good as he’s been, cannot give up a home run with a one run lead late in the game.

MLB Network Broadcast team of Greg Amsinger and Mitch Williams, annoying all day.

Another note on the Reds Offense, and this is no indictment of anyone, but how many times have we seen the Reds get a big early lead, and not be able to sustain it? A few reminders: Atlanta, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Denver today.

The Reds get swept and lose 5 of 6 on this road trip.

Sorry For The Delay in Posting, But I’m Back Now

So I’m sitting here watching the final game of this Reds/Rockies series, which is being carried only on the MLB Network of which I am a fan, but Greg Amsinger and Mitch Williams are killing me.

If I here how 5 runs won’t win a game in Colorado I’m going to be sick. I ask Mitch where were you on Tuesday night? Last I checked the final score was 3-2.

And if Greg Amsinger continues to tell me how the Rockies aren’t out of it or we have ourselves a ballgame again I’m going to turn the TV off and listen on 700 WLW courtesy of the MLB at Bat application on the iPhone.

Rounding Third and Heading For Home Game Summary

Chapman Dazzles, Reds Roll Brewers 8-4

Good

So many good things from the game tonight, I don’t even now where to begin…..
  • Aroldis Chapman……..WOW!!!!! 1IP 0H 0ER 0BB 1SO on 8 pitches. He hit 103 on the gun.
  • Joey Votto……..MVP!!!!! 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and 3RBI and a walk, and a gold glove play in the 9th inning.
  • Scott Rolen, 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI, and a wicked backhanded throw to second to end the game.
  • Sam LeCure was outstanding again and got a well deserved win. 2IP 1H 0R 0ER 1BB 1SO on 30 pitches.
  • Bill Bray had another solid outing as well.
  • Reds win another series and paired with a Cardinal loss tonight and now lead the NL Central by 7 games.
  • The Reds go 19-8 in the month of August, best record in all of Major League Baseball.
  • With a Padres loss tonight (They are currently down 7-3 to Arizona after 6) the Reds are tied with the Atlanta Braves for the best record in the NL at 77-55.
  • The Houston Astros. Thank you very much!!!
Bad

  • Jay Bruce was scratched before the game for precautionary measures after having a pain in his left side.
Ugly

  • Jonny Gomes error in the 5th that plated two runs, I like the guy, but he is a liability at the plate and in the field. He did make up for it with a 2 run HR.
  • The Crowd. After last night’s weak crowd, tonight was only about 6,000 more. For a baseball town that cherishes its history and the fact they haven’t had a winner in 9 years you would think people would be more excited. NO MORE EXCUSES CINCINNATIANS!!!

Rounding Third and Heading For Home Game Summary

Comeback Reds Strike Again, Push Lead Over Cardinals to 5 Games

Box Score

The Good

Drew Stubbs, 3 for 5 with a double and a bunt single, scored 3 runs, no strikeouts in the leadoff spot

Jay Bruce had another home run today

Chris Valaika had another hit and an RBI

Ramon Hernandez continued his clutch hitting with 3 hits and an RBI

Chris Heisey was 2 for 4 with 2 runs

Reds aggressive baserunning pushed the hand of the Cubs with the game on the line and forced an error to score the go ahead run in the 8th

Sam LeCure pitched two solid innings when the game was on the line

Logan Ondrusek was brought in to the game in a tight spot in the 8th and got an inning ending double play

Cordero was 1,2,3 yet again. Dare I say Cordero is back?

The Reds push their lead over the Whiny Cardinals to 5 games, the most since 2002

The Reds win another series

The Bad

Travis Wood just wasn’t sharp and only went 5.1 innings

Arthur Rhodes got roughed up for the second consecutive appearance allowing the Cubs to tie the game after the Reds had taken a two run lead in the bottom half of the 7th

The Ugly

The St. Louis Cardinals. Since sweeping the Reds in early August, they have gone 1-4 in their last five series losing to the likes of the Brewers, Cubs, Nationals, and Pirates. They now go to Houston to play the Astros who have owned them all year, and the Reds could increase their lead even more before they go to St. Louis this weekend in an attempt to put the Cardinals away.

Will be another interesting week of baseball in the National League…………..
